The monarch butterfly population has dropped more than 80-percent in the past 20 years, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Experts said this is due to habitat, such as milkweed, disappearing. The DNR said helping to increase the population is as simple as planting some milkweed in your own yard.
You can buy milkweed seeds or potted plants at most greenhouses. They recommend planting them sometime during the month of October in a place with plenty of sunlight and away from other plants. The milkweed will start growing by early June and will continue to re-seed itself for many years into the future.
